1. What drew you to work at Le repos Saint-François d’Assise?
After completing my certificate in accounting at UQAM, I worked in finance. An acquaintance of mine who used to work at Le repos Saint-François told me about the organization and sparked my curiosity. I met with the director general for an interview. He told me about the organization’s vision and philosophy of openness and the cemetery’s new projects. I found the conversation to be profoundly human.
Working here takes me out of my comfort zone, since I don’t have a background in mortuary studies like most of my colleagues. But I love advising people! What’s more, there’s no pressure to sell. The approach is really different from the work experiences I’ve had in the past.
2. What does a typical workday look like for you?
As a family attendant and office clerk, my tasks vary a lot. My role is to answer customers and guide them through the appropriate steps to take in the event of a death or for prearrangements. I sometimes support families on site when their loved one’s ashes are laid to rest or placed in a niche. I also take care of the administrative side, such as updating customer files and paying of invoices.
3. What qualities do you need for your job?
In my case, the most important thing is to be able to do many things. Then there’s the ability to work in a team and to communicate effectively. You also have to be a good listener for customers, some of whom are going through difficult times.
4. What gives meaning to your work?
What makes me want to get up in the morning is how varied my tasks are. There’s nothing routine about it, and for me, that’s a big plus. I’ve been working here for four years and I’m still very happy with the choice I made.
5. What motivates you to continue working for the organization?
Le repos Saint-François d’Assise has lots of projects in the works, and there are good prospects for advancement. As an employee, it’s motivating to know that you can continue to grow within the organization.
