Over 44 years at Le repos Saint-François d’Assise
I started working here in the summer of 1978 when I was 17. At the time, I was still a student, and as I enjoyed my experience at Le repos Saint-François d’Assise, I opted for a career at the cemetery. Now at 61, I’m still here! I still enjoy what I’m doing, whether it’s taking care of a crypt or niche for a funeral, doing building maintenance, or coordinating logistics with the grave marker engraver,!
In addition to being a workman, I’m president of the Repos Saint-François d’Assise union. Suffice to say, I don’t have time to get bored! There are many opportunities for advancement here and my job gives me a good quality of life.
The importance of human contact
My favourite part of the job is meeting people. The human contact is rewarding, both at funerals and when I’m working with my team. Some families visit the cemetery more often, and you build relationships over time. I love talking to people and listening to what they have to say.
Achieving your potential while developing your skills
I’ve learned a lot through my work at the cemetery. Over the years, I’ve developed skills by doing all kinds of jobs, learning to operate heavy machinery and taking various training courses. Even with my retirement coming up soon, it’s important for me to keep learning so I can stay versatile, but also because I just like learning.
